(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Joint Postal Trade Unions Front has rejected this evening’s planned talks with Minister of Postal Services MHA Haleem, to end the on-going stalemate.
Speaking to a prominent online news portal in the isle, the convenor of the Front Chinthaka Bandara said the 48-hr strike action that was launched at 4pm yesterday, is successfully underway at present.
He said although the Subject Minister has invited for a meeting this evening, the unions decided to boycott talks, after the Colombo Central Mail Exchange was given additional police protection.
Chinthaka Bandara demanded the removal of the police protection to avoid any escalation of violence between the officers and postal employees.
He said over 200,000 letters and parcels are now languishing at the Mail Exchange due to the strike and therefore requested the Minister to intervene in the matter, promptly.
The Joint Postal Trade Unions Front launched a 48-hour token strike action at 4pm yesterday based on several demands.
The Unions have threatened to launch indefinite strike action next week if their demands are not met promptly.
